Blade Runner Soundtracks (most of them)

Blade Runner is one of those movies that everybody either saw of heard of it. It was a peculiar little film that I find very dear to my heart. It's perhaps my favorite movie of all times. I won't talk about the movie in great detail mostly because it would just go on and on. What I want to talk about it is its soundtrack. There are a lot of versions and interpretations of it so I'll just share every version I have.

If you're not familiar with the soundtrack I would suggest that you start with the initial 1994 release of the soundtrack as it contains most of the compositions that were in the movie and is performed by Vangelis.

I'll start chronologically.

Okay, so back when Blade Runner got out and made a name for itself the soundtrack never really was released by itself. Or more exactly it wasn't released in its original format. Vangelis was the guy who made it but in fact the first official soundtrack was done by an orchestra adapting scores that Vangelis made for the film.

I'm not sure why they did it but this is the end result:

New American Orchestra
Orchestral adaptation of music composed for the motion picture by Vangelis
1982

Despite the lengthy title it really is what it says. Vangelis songs adapted by an orchestra and it feels actually quite natural. I thought this would be terrible but it's enjoyable. The tracks are made with orchestral instrumentation which makes it a thrill to listen if you already know the Vangelis soundtrack because of the apparent lack of keyboards. The only non full orchestral song is the End Titles which seem really out of place here since it combines keyboards and funky guitar riffs. To further annoy the listener they included another version of the same track. But yeah, for the most part it gives a new insight at the songs. The best part of this release, in my opinion, is that it features One More Kiss that's sung by a female vocalist (that sounds better than the original version). Its runtime is barely past 30 minutes so to no surprise this pissed off a lot fans who expected a Vangelis full hour album which in turn caused numerous bootleg releases (a theme I'll address at the end of the post.

Tracklist for this would be:

1. Love Theme (4:12)
2. Main Title (5:01)
3. One More Kiss, Dear (4:00)
4. Memories of Green (4:50)
5. End Title (4:17)
6. Blade Runner Blues (4:38)
7. Farewell (3:10)
8. End Title Reprise (3:08)

Download.

After the initial "official" soundtrack more than 10 years passed before the actual soundtrack was released. This was in 1994 and it is probably the most widespread version of this soundtrack.

Vangelis
Blade Runner
 1994

The soundtrack itself is really Vangelis at its heart. Heavy keyboard music that just screams of 80s music. Thankfully it's not that kitsch as his other soundtracks due to the nature of the movie. Because the movie was so melancholic and dark there really is no room for any happy jittery music. Most of the tracks are very atmospheric and slow to fit the theme and he got it just right.

Along with the songs that were used in the film Vangelis also added a bunch of songs that were made for the movie but never ended up in it. Even with all these tracks there were still a lot of unpublished tracks. Despite that this is probably the best release if you want the standard version of the movie soundtrack and the length is at reasonable 57 minutes. Did I ever mention that this is the perfect music while going to bed aside from Stars of the Lid?

The tracks are:

1. Main Titles (3:42)
2. Blush Response (5:47)
3. Wait for Me (5:27)
4. Rachel's Song (4:46)
5. Love Theme (4:56)
6. One More Kiss, Dear (3:58)
7. Blade Runner Blues (8:53)
8. Memories of Green (5:05)
9. Tales of the Future (4:46)
10. Damask Rose (2:32)
11. Blade Runner (End Titles) (4:40)
12. Tears in Rain (3:00)

This is the first cd of the Blade Runner Trilogy so just download that instead.

Vangelis
Blade Runner Trilogy
2007

As far as the original releases go this is the definitive collection of the soundtrack released along with the collectors edition of the movie. Accompanied by the exact same 1994 soundtrack on the first CD there are two extra CDs included.

The second CD includes a lot of previously unreleased material that were and were not used in the movie. Probably the most notable from this bunch is "Tears In The Rain" which is now called "Fading Away" and is the same but without the voice. So it's more ambient bliss by Vangelis. A lot of these songs were not meant to be "songs" but ambient passages in the movie which makes this pretty much ambient music devoid of long synth solos and crap like that.

The third CD is music that was inspired by the movie. This whole CD feels like a filler to ramp up the price tag of the Movies Collector Edition. There are some good tracks but for the most part I didn't really enjoy it. Maybe you will.

Bootlegs

Esper Edition

As I have mentioned earlier there are a lot of bootlegs that were released ever since the movie got out. Roger posted the Esper edition in the comments a while back when I originally posted the 1994 version of the soundtack. It contains two CDs with a fair share of the music that can't be found on the originals. I'd say that this is the most complete bootleg version. Although there are a lot of rereleases of the Esper version so I'm not really sure which version is this one.

Wikipedia notes that there's an updated Esper edition called The Retirement Edition with improved sound and better versions of various songs. It also has more material that spans over 5 cds. If someone has it please share it!

Download it 1 and 2.

Deck Art Limited Edition

This is the second bootleg version that I have and it's probably the strangest. It's just one big track that goes on for about an hour with tracks seamlessly joined and chronologically sorted with the scenes of the movie. So it's like an audio journey of the movie, for the most part. It does not contain much new stuff (aside from maybe the longest versions of the Japanese traditional themes and some weird Arabian music) but it's very enjoyable if you know the movie and the soundtrack well. A cool little novelty. Apparently it's from Japan.

Part 1, 2 and 3. It's in flac.

Again, if someone has (of if you can find it) the previously mentioned The Retirement Edition of the Esper bootleg please share it because I would love to hear it.

I don't know why I love this soundtrack so much, don't give me that worried strange look. :D

Porco Rosso aka Kurenai no Buta Original Soundtrack by Joe Hisaishi

The story of Porco Rosso is set in 1920s and is focused around a peculiar character who was an ace in the first world war. I was attracted to this anime mainly because I like that era of human history and because, unusually for Miyazaki, the story takes place in real locations. Locations are spread over the Adriatic sea so it's kinda interesting to see this movie if you live around these parts. The movie is filled with homages to early aviation and aviators and to me it gives a nice nostalgic feeling.

As with many films after and before this one Miyazaki collaborated with Joe Hisaishi on the soundtrack. The soundtrack varies from orchestral pieces to piano melodies. Everything a fan of Hisaishi could want. There are 23 songs and most of them don't clock that much. Average length is about 2 and a half minutes which I sometimes found annoying because some melodies sound really great and deserved much more time length so I found myself often repeating one short song over and over. Perhaps the most notable song is the beautiful French chanson from that age sang by Tokiko Kato. I'm not French so I'm not sure how accurate she got the accent but it sounds really great and you can feel the Edith Piaf vibe all through it. All in all this is a pretty good soundtrack. Not exactly the most original soundtrack Hisaishi ever did but it's definitely worth checking out. The anime is also recommended.

Original Soundtrack - Up

Hey, 200 followers. I feel popular. 8)

Up was a very uplifting (oh play on words) film that most of us saw, this year I think? Or was it 2009? I don't keep track of time.

Anyways, besides swell animation and a rather original and heart warming story about letting your past go this little movie also had a really great soundtrack.

What I particularly liked about it is its touch of swing in it. Somehow I felt the Rudy Valle and all the others in this soundtrack. It had that something which made me like it a lot. It has its share of orchestral pieces in it as well but I found them somewhat medicore. Despite that, it's a really good soundtrack that you should check out if you haven't already.

The Seatbelts - Cowboy Bebop OST 1 (Flac)

Sorry about the excessive delay(s) of this, mediafire is giving me a lot of trouble for a while now. But enough about my whining.

First things first, when I was buying this I was sort of cheated because I thought I'm buying the original ones and not the bootleg version. Although it was pretty stupid of me to assume that they would sell real versions in CHINA. I can't really say that I notice any difference in terms of sound quality so I guess both are the same. The only possible difference is that the paper that the booklet is made of has more blurred out letters and is overall more crude in design.

The Seatbelts were a jazz troupe that was formed in order to make the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack and were led by Yoko Kanno. While the soundtrack is predominantly jazz they mix a lot of other genres in as well so you have a very diverse soundtrack; which is awesome. I already talked about this before so there's no point in me repeating anything.

Original Soundtrack - Nausicaa Of The Valley Of Wind

There are several versions of this soundtrack from what I gathered. The one I'm posting is supposed to be the "image album" (whatever the hell that means). From all the versions this one is my favorite simply because it holds my most favored songs from the movie and in their best versions (best versions for me at least :P).

In any case, the movie is set in a world that was destroyed by huge god-thing giants in 10 days. Humans survived and are struggling for existence while the Earth regenerates. The destruction though happened a very long time ago so it's now mostly legends and the world today is slowly regenerating through killing every human on the planet. :D The reign of humans is long over and huge bugs now dominate the food chain. That's a bit basic plot of the movie. It later gets on more complex and goes into bible epic proportions. The manga on the other hand (which I warmly recommend, I think I still have it somewhere so I might post it in the near future) is far more political and more warfare oriented which makes it far more complex.

Since the movie was made in 1984 you can expect the usual cheesy electronics, synths, electronic drums etc. but they happen to be very well orchestrated and the soundtrack isn't as bland as I might have hinted. It was composed by Joe Hisaishi and this was the first collaboration between Miyazaki and Hisaishi so this soundtrack also has a historical meaning of sort. In a way the songs on this soundtrack a bit remind me of music that were in games of the 90s. Especially the third track, reminds me so much of one game I used to play when I was kid on Turbo Grafix 16 but sadly I can't remember the name (it was a racing game I think, with F1 formulas).

To make it short. If you liked the movie, you'll like the soundtrack because a large deal of the atmosphere in the movie was contributed by the music. If you like 80s electronics and stuff you'll like this as well (probably) and finally if you collect soundtracks made by Joe Hisaishi you need to get this because of its historic importance.

Ring 0 Original Soundtrack

I posted this a long time ago on TNA, twice, and the links died out pretty fast. I was never really bothered to reupload it because afterwords I felt that this is a little out of touch with the blog. That's why I'm posting it here with some additional thoughts and interesting (I guess) experiences with watching the Ring series. The soundtrack related text starts at the bottom of the second picture.

I was fairly young when the first remake got out in Europe (I was about 12). I found out about it through some trailer that was on a video tape of some other movies. When I saw the trailer I was kinda glad that I don't really need to watch this movie because I thought it would freak me out a lot. Then a few weeks later I was surfing through the local video store with nothing really gaining my interest. And then this little interesting tape caught my eye. "Hey it's that movie... uhh should I watch it or not?" and yeah I did.

It's interesting how can something influence a persons psyche and subconsciousness so much by just showing a series of moving pictures also known as movies. A story that practically had nothing in common with my life and yet it had everything I was afraid of. Especially the "cursed tape", every fucking scene of that tape had a thing that I was afraid of. Mirrors (I am disgusted by them, I can barley look at them for some reason), that stare, black and white color, cliffs, dark water and yes, I am actually afraid of ladders (I'm unable to climb more than one step of ladders, I freeze and can't move -_-). Another interesting anecdote I had with this movie is that upon the first view of this movie I completely kicked out the final legendary scene out of my head. I had no idea I watched it. I only realized it when I watched it for the second time about a year after. I'll never forget the moment when I completely freaked out screaming "THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN THE FIRST TIME" while watching the scene and having flashbacks of me watching it for the first time and completely erasing it from my memory.

After that second watch I decided to avoid the Ring franchise because it didn't really affect my mind in a good way. It took me about 5 years to force myself to watch it again. I found all the movies and even the Korean one (which was terrible actually). I watched them all, twice, in hopes to flush out my silly fears. Yeah; that didn't really help.

Among all the sequels, remakes etc. there stood just one more thing I didn't yet watch and that was Ring 0. In all previous movies the girl was portrayed as something unhuman, unnatural and vengeful over mankind. This movie showed her human side, in this movie she was the victim and people were the monsters. It showed her fragile and natural side which was something something I never really expected when I watched it for the first time. It was at that time when I realized that she was actually human before and that there's a good reason as to why she became after what she was.

The soundtrack is naturally quite fitting, the opening and ending tracks were made by a visual kei band (larc en ciel, something like that). Both of those songs were very uninteresting and I can't really tell that I listened them to more than twice. The rest of the soundtrack on the other hand is quite good. It was composed by Shinichirou Ogata (he also did one Ghost In The Shell soundtrack, can't remember which though) and it mostly orchestral music. But there are ambient and some noisy passages that make this soundtrack very fitting for the whole setting of an somewhat Shakespeare plot. It's funny how one track gets to be sad and melancholic flute arranged piece and then all of the sudden the next track falls deep into ambient and sort of eerie sound. I like that, it never gets boring that way. It brings you the sad mood of a tragic, inevitable violent death of a person that was just simply born that way.
I don't need to watch Ring movies anymore, the people and the places appear in my dreams on regular basis ever since I watched it for the first time.

Kanno Yoshihiro - Angel's Egg Soundtrack

Wow. When I first saw this anime I wasn't sure what I just watched all I knew is that something like this will not happen again very soon in anime world. Sometimes you just make something for your own well being and for your own soul. It is ones view on religion and his relation with it. To me that is the most accurate description of this anime. Naturally the screenwriter never made any public explanations of this anime. Written by Mamoru Oshii and coupled with Yoshitaka Amanos superb animation and amazing architecture and background drawings this little deviant child that was made in 1985 is perhaps my most favorite anime of all times along with Cowboy Bebop.

Just like the anime the soundtrack is also amazingly done. It sounds like a huge mechanical god that screams in orchestral and choir music. Chilling and eerie which fits perfectly with the scenery of the anime. It sounds so surreal that it feels like a dream, especially when you listen it at night, like myself. :D Therefore I offer you to listen this wondrous sounds of somehow sad beauty. Perhaps you'll like it as much as I do.

Nagata Shigeru - Umi Ga Kikoeru (Ocean Waves) OST

When it comes to anime I never really enjoyed romance+slice of life anime. It's not that I hate them, I just don't understand them and find no fun in them whatsoever. I now and then give some show a shot but it fails me most of the time. I guess I'm just not for it. I mean, I watched Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and I didn't even realize that it's supposed to be a comedy. -_- I didn't laugh even once. Then one day I heard of Ocean Waves. At first I was really skeptical about it but since I'm a complete Ghibli slut that will suck and swallow everything they throw out I decided to watch it. Surprisingly Miyazaki didn't have a major role in this anime (I don't think he even participated in making this one). The studio had an idea that only young people from their studio should make it. In the end I actually liked this. It really is a good, realistic slice of life anime and I think that it's terribly underrated. I won't spoil you the story so I'll just say that there's a torrent circulating around isohunt that has this anime (along with a lot of other Ghibli movies) and it's still active so you should have no problem getting it. The main point about this post is the soundtrack so I don't really need to explain the plot anyway. Or you could, you know, buy it if you don't live in such a shithole like myself. :D

When I said that I first heard of Ocean Waves I ment that, literary. I heard the soundtrack and I really enjoyed it so I thought the movie would not be so bad either and I was right tee hee. It has its share of flaws (some melodies are a bit too cheesy) but overall I think it's well made and fits with the mood of the anime perfectly. The main title song (Umi Ga Kikoeru) is especially well composed. Starts very simple by just playing around with the piano and then it gradually builds on and on untill it reaches its trumpet sort of climax but nothing spectacular, it almost comes like a soft breeze (whoa I'm getting all romantic over this -_-).

In short, if you watched this you should get this because the soundtrack rocks. If you haven't watched it you should still get it for its great composition and jazzy feeling (among other things). Note that it's not done by Joe Hisaishi which is kinda strange but it comes to me actually as an refreshment (kinda getting tierd of his soundtracks although Nausicaa will never get old).

Recommended!

Yasou Getsuna (梁邦彦) - 12 Kingdoms - Piano Memories

12 Kingdoms was a peculiar anime when I first saw it. It is divided into several arcs and it spans over 45 episodes. It's about a person who is confronted by a certain being and then is dragged into an middle aged fantasy world that is divided into 12 kingdoms. At first this person hardly survives and is regarded as scum. As the story goes on she becomes a princess and governs from there a kingdom. It's kinda weird because I expected this to happen a lot slower but I guess the main point of this series is politics. The story has a lot of lore and well thought out rules and settings. Something like a D&D wet dream.

Since this setting was highly influenced by middle age China so is the soundtrack (to some extent). I didn't like the OST very mcuh and I find it to be very, bland. The piano version on the other hand is magnificent. Grety arrangements follow through the whole album from combat music to sheer mellow music we all like. It's mostly just piano but some other instruments kick in from time to time. Check this one out if you enjoy the sound of a piano.

Cowboy Bebop - OST, No Disc, Blue and Vitaminless

Sometimes I think, oh yes, I’d move to
Where all the shooting stars are gone
With all of our wishes
How could they bear, oh no, to carry
Around the stupid human hopes
So I’m gonna help, I will!

Give me a key to lock
The door to the secret paradise
There are so many queuing up
And I won’t let them in
Look at them
They are cheeky
They are never worthy to be saved

Sometimes I feel, oh yes, I could do
Almost everything I wanted
And it makes me cry

Lay your heart, lay your soul
upon my magic carpet
now we are flying
to Venus just to kill some time for tea, OK?
Remember, surrender
There’s nothing you can do ‘cause
Love’s such a joke
Like a little Jack-in-the-box, you know
A little Jack-in-the box

The lyrics above are from a song called Flying Teapot and this blog was named after this song.

The anime Cowboy Bebop is set in year 2071. Life on Earth has been demolished due to the fact the fucking Moon blew up! xD Because of that huge amounts of rocks are falling down on Earth (among other disasters that occurred because of this) making life on Earth almost impossible. Thus humans emigrated primeraly to Mars but also to other planets to and space stations. Most people now live on Mars in huge craters that are shilded by huge domes around it and the enviroment in these huge dome like buildings are shaped to look like life on Earth. That's the setting of the story, at least one bit. The story follows a group of bounty hunters who are on a ship called Bebop. The crew consists of 4 humans and one dog. Each character fills the weakness of another character so in whole they make an perfect team (non of them are able to get food it seems haha). I won't spoil much of the plot but just so you know the anime is episodic but the main plot follows here and there giving you just small bits untill the last few episodes where everything starts to unfold. Along with the series there's also an movie, two mangas, two video games (they weren't released outside Japan me thinks) and some questionable live action adaptations.

This happens to be my favorite anime of all times (seriously it is, there's no other except maybe Angel's Egg but that one is more for the soul) so I managed to collect most of the soundtracks and bootleg soundtracks that got out one way or another. I'll be posting 4 here and in the future I'll post some other ones (like the 5 cd limited boxed edition but that will have a post of its own because it deserves it!).

The anime has numerous refereces to jazz and most episodes are named after Jazz songs and similar. Naturally the soundtrack is like that as well. All soundtracks are made by a band called The Seatbelts led by the all popular Yoko Kanno who writes the music (she also did music for several other animes like Wolf's Rain). The music is quite diverse to say at least. For example the opening song is an wild and hectic jazz while the ending is an mid paced rocky ballad. While the main areas of music in the soundtrack is jazz and rock they aren't afraid to venture into other genres which gives this soundtrack an high replay value.

For now I uploaded 4 sountracks which are:

Vangelis - Blade Runner

I'm listening to this a lot these days. I didn't really enjoy this movie the first time I watched it; but that's mostly because I watched it with my dad and he usually ruins the mood of watching movies. The second time I watched I really enjoyed it. The setting and the music, it's all great noir/sci fi stuff with an heavy dose of melancholy and a bit of religion. Great movie and equally great soundtrack. Definitely get this one.

Kenji Kawai - Ghost In The Shell OST

Photobucket

Ghost In The Shell is a well known sci-fi anime from 1995. It has everything a sci-fi movie needs such as robots, cyborgs, political games, sabotage and terrorists. When I was watching it I had a great deal of trouble of following the plot. This is mostly because this anime is not some standard action flick it has an very deep and well developed plot and dialogs are pain in the ass to understand if your native language is not English. Still this anime is very atmospheric and highly enjoyable. Soundtrack is just like the movie very atmospheric and epic-like especially the first song. Kenji seems to like making these kind of soundtracks (he also did soundtrack for Ringu 2) and he has plenty of experience in that area so the soundtrack is very enjoyable and I don't think anyone could make it any better.

久石譲 (Joe Hisaishi) - Tonari No Totoro OST

Hayao Miyazaki is today one of the most popular/famous animators and he's been making some great movies through all his life. Most notables are: Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke. Tonari No Totoro (or My Neighbor Totoro in English) might not be so popular as the ones I've been mentioning but it's still an nice movie and fairly known. More importantly Tonari No Totoro is actually an reflection of Miyazakis childhood that he spent with his brother and a lot of situations in the movie also occurred in his childhood (no, he did not see huge furry trolls in his childhood but for example his mother had the same disease as the mother in the film etc.) . The reason he used two girls instead two boys as main characters was ( as he explained in one of his interviews) because it would be too painful for him to do that. As usual Miyazaki hires Hisaishi to music for his animation and as always the soundtrack is exceptional. Just as the movie theme the music is also mellow and warmhearted.

芸能山城組 (Geinoh Yamashirogumi) - Akira OST

芸能山城組 or Geinoh Yamashirogumi is a Japanese musical collective founded on January 19, 1974 by Shoji Yamashiro, consisting of hundreds of people from all walks of life: journalists, doctors, engineers, students, businessmen, etc. The array of talents and ideas available brings a peerless degree of creativity to their work, which is known for skillful fusion of traditional music with high technology. Their early albums were marked by a distinct world influence, with works such as Chi No Hibiki (Echoes of the Earth Sing East Europe) displaying Bulgarian and other eastern European singing styles and Africa Genjoh (The African Vision Singing) featuring African styalised chanting. Osore-zan - Dou No Kenbai, furhermore, offered a more psychedelic flavor with Krautrock influences and the introduction of guitar work.

Their work for Akira soundtrack is simply amazing. From the very beginning of the soundtrack starts this tribal like music that perfectly fits in the futuristic concrete jungle of Neo Tokyo. The tribal music is dominant but there is also an large array of other music from ambient to authentic Japanese traditional music. One of my favorite soundtracks.

Boredoms - Ichi The Killer Soundtrack

Ichi the killer was at first an manga that started around 1998 and finished in 2001, which means it ran for a very long time. The plot revolves around two main characters. One is a guy called Ichi who looks like a normal guy and does everything normal people do but acts like a total pussy. The good thing about Ichi is that when someone makes him cry he turns into a psychotic killer with razor blades on his boots and starts to cut everyone and everything in a nice gory way. The second character is Kakihara an yakuza masochist who seeks Ichi because he is fascinated by his violence. The manga later got an movie adaptation and Boredoms made a soundtrack for it! Since this is the only Boredoms album I listened (yes I'm ashamed to admit it) I can't really compare how this album is different from their other works but nevertheless this soundtrack is great filled with tribal like drums and has an quite good jazzy feeling throughout the album.
