Crypt Sermon - 2015 - Out Of The Garden

Holy shit this came out in 2015. I thought this album is way younger (last year or something), I'm pretty sure I included it in my end of the year list of likes. At first I didn't dig this album very much, me not being a huge doom junkie helped a lot but eventually it did grow on me quite a bit. This happens a lot to me when it come to more slower sounding bands, I can't remember what the fuck they were duing.  Crypt Sermon plays that old-ish style of doom that sounds all grandiose and majestic, you know, Candlemass and shit like that but to me they definitely seem a bit more faster than your usual trad doom band. I remember vaguely that this album did quite a splash (at least on the internet) and I think it was pretty deserved, this album is just pure unpretentious fun. It rides that fine line of packing a punch but still being catchy and memorable. I often find myself humming hooks from this album because they really are just that great. The vocals help here a lot, being dramatic and all that but not sounding cringy. It's honest and that's what counts here.

Zaum - 2014 - Oracles

Even though the stoner metal scene is riddled with generic copycats and Sleep worshiping every now and then a band will pop up that offers something a little bit different. Zaum is a Canadian band that takes those middle eastern influenced sounds of Dopesmoker and rides with them in fifth gear on the first two tracks. They're atmospheric, massive and just right enough length to not get obnoxiously boring. The riffs might not be the second coming of Tommy Iommi but they do an excellent job of conveying hypnotic feelings. After those two tracks the albums switches to a more OM influenced sound (especially on the last track) which are admittedly less interesting than the A side of the album but are still enjoyable in their own right.

Desolate Shrine - The Sanctum of Human Darkness

In the last few years (or maybe it has been a decade already) a certain kind of sound started to take hold in death metal. It's the sound that comes out of deep caverns where cambrian fossils play guitars that sound like a swarm of flies mixed with clacking of septic tank hatch doors. Also known as Incantation worship or New York death metal in general or just new old school death metal. There are a lot of bands that do this sort of thing now and a lot of them sound the same. I find them to  be really fun to listen but they can get stale after a while. I've been loving most of these bands but in a very biased way because I like the sound of it. I don't really care if it's the same thing all over again with each new band that I stumble upon next.

Desolate Shrine is one of those new bands that incorporated this sound or style into their music. It's a relatively new band from Finland that released their debut in 2011 called Tenebrous Towers. Tenebrous Towers was a good album but it felt like they were just flexing their muscles with it and warming up. You know, just to prove they can do this sort of music. A year later they released The Sanctum of Human Darkness and everything sank into place. The music finally took its desired form and the band blossomed in full.

The album feels conceptual but that might be just my interpretation. Keeping up with the Satanic theme of the album the music is fittingly bleak, eerie and filled with malice. The riffs are not "fun" nor energetic. Each song is a slow, distorted pummeling of your senses with incredibly deep guitar tone and overall production. They do change the pace every now and then, speeding things up and those parts are especially great. The pacing is done well on most of the songs so when the fast parts kick in they feel really tight and rewarding to listen. The album does suffer at times, some songs feel like they're just a collection of unconnected riffs and such but for the most part it's really good. They did improve on that in the next album which came out this year although they both sound very similar.

Overall it's a great death metal album mixed with some doom as well so if you're into this sort of sound I'd suggest checking it out but if you're not into this cavernous stuff you'll be bored to tears.

Boris - A Bao A Qu

Boris are have been kicking around for a very long time now and they're also one of my favorite bands. Because they are so well known I didn't bother to post their stuff (I did post their discog early on but all those links are dead and gone) but I think this is worth sharing because of two reasons: the first reason is my favorite song by them and the second reason is that this is a bit more obscure release so maybe not all of you Boris enthusiasts have it.

A Bao A Qu has several versions, reworks and live versions. I managed to find seven of them and this is the longest one clocking at just a bit over 10 minutes. The song itself is set into two parts. The first part is a very laid back drone-y intro that reminds me a lot of Gymnopédies, 1. Lent et douloureux by Erik Satie (without the feedback of course). I don't know if this a tribute or a rip off but the notes seem very similar. Nevertheless this is probably the better half of the song. After about 4 or so minutes of drone Boris shift into high gear and lay out some really fine doom/sludge thing they usually do (or did). Big open guitar riffs, echoes vocals and all the good stuff they do best and this part transitions quite well from the quiet one.

What they achieve the most with this certain song is laying out a feeling of some happy solitude. One of those feelings that you get when you stare out of some tall building on a quiet sunday evening. Watching last rays of Sun disappear.

Blood Ceremony - Blood Ceremony

Blood Ceremony is a relatively new band from the Canada(!) (Toronto to be exact). This seems to be their only release (released in 2008) so far but I have high hopes that maybe next year they will put out something new.

It's basically a great blend of Ozzy-era Black Sabbath riffing and psychedelic rock which certainly is not a bad thing and along with that you get female vocals and flute arrangements. It's a fun little ride if you don't have anything better to do. Just relax and let the dooooooooom flowwww~

Coffins / The Arm and Sword of a Bastard God

Last flac post so I wanted to post something really great and not so common among the blogsphere (I think :O).

I'm sure anyone who's into metal has heard of Coffins. It's one of those legendary doom bands alongside with Corrupted and stuff like that. But who is The Arm and Sword of a Bastard God? I'll say again, The Arm and Sword of a Bastard God. I love that name, it's so, long. Anyway they are from US (California to be more exact) and they are an relatively new band. So far the only official release is this split. There is a demo available on their myspace if you are interested but it's not really that good as are the songs on this split.

This split is one damn fine bone crushing sound orgy. Slow, heavy and br00tal. It has all that I need from doom metal and associated genres. I'm not really good with explaining so I guess it's up to you to decide. It got good reviews on Metal Archives if that means anything to you.

Grivf - Yggdrasil

I love this album for two things. First one is that I got it for free and the guy from Grivf sent it to me. He also paid the postage and was even nice enough to slip in some text of explanation of the name and the album. I felt so special and important that day. xD

The other reason why I love this album is because it's fucking great obviously. Why would I bother ripping it anyway if it wasn't good. There's a fairly good review here so I won't bother with much typing. Someone said it better anyway. :D

Boris

Ah Boris. I have listened to a lot of bands (yay for internet) but Boris will always have a special part in my little wooden heart. Funny though, now that I finally did all this I have no idea what to write. I thought I should write some humongous text to go along with all of this but I don't really have anything constructive to say. So anyway, people who are beginning with this band will most likely ask themselves "Where to start?". Well that's a tricky question because Boris is an very diverse band they changed styles a lot of times. But here's my advice. If you are into drone then you should start off with Absolutego, then with Solomon volumes and then with Dronevil. If you are into sludge then you should start with Amplifier Worship. If you are into stoner metal/hard rock then start with all famous Pink album and Heavy Rocks. If you are into experimental and unusual then go with Soundtrack for film "Mabuta No Ura". That's little advice what I can give. Either way shall we start?

This is the full discography except the DVDs which I haven't found so if someone has them please share it with me. :D

Inter Arbores - The Last God

Inter Arbores is an rather unknown funeral doom metal band from Russia. They didn't release much, just three or so promos/whatever. This is their latest released in 2005. I got it through a friend for free and I can say even though it's an mini cd it sounds awesome. It packs just one song called Last God and someone posted a live video of it on youtube but it seems they suck live. Anyway, check it out you won't regret it if you are into doom metal stuff.

Goatsnake - Vol. 1

Well this was first Goatsnake album and it is some heavy Black Sabbath worship but much more heavy I guess. Greg Anderson is on the guitars so it's kinda interesting to hear some moar complicated riffs from him. Notice the Sunn logo on the cover ha! Anyway...

Herem - I Pulsa diNura

I am and always was such a sucker for female vocalists especially if they scream/growl. This album is kinda a fetish possession of mine since their vocalist is female. I Pulsa diNura is their first album and I guess it's pretty good, standard sludgy doom metal that everyone loves but has this epic feeling to it. They are from Finland, no idea why the title sounds so Spanish.

Tracklist:

1. ...And Hell Sent An Angel (03:39)
2. White Walls (07:27)
3. Blood For A God (The Dead Walk The Earth Again) (06:46)

Pelican/Mono Split

Well this is an rather interesting split. The common thing about these two bands is that they are both instrumental and well, that's pretty much all they have in common as I see it. Pelican, well Pelican plays doom metal but in very different fashion because they tend to drift off to other genres as well and there's no doubt that a lot of sludge influence is also present but not to complicate with genres let's just say it's doom hehe. Anyway! I guess an comparison with Cult Of Luna in terms of sound is a good call. Mono on the other hand plays very much straightforward post-rock but with much more focus on the atmosphere and sound then on rhythm and technical aspect of playing. They have a nasty habit of making loooong songs but that's tolerable since their sound is very sweet. Yearning is my favorite song by them. Anyway this is a great split not to be missed.

02. Angel Tears (James Plotkin remix) (06:44)
03. Yearning (15:44)
