Flail - 2018 - Rehearsal MMXVIII

 

Here is something I discovered during this November and it is something different and strange! Flail is also a Finnish band but a much more lowkey band (although they do have a spotify page!) with not much info about them on the web. This rehearsal tape was their first official release and as luck would have it was also the first release I heard from them. Having only skimmed their future releases after this one I'm not really in a position to tell you how kvlt this one is compared to the newer ones but I does feel like this tape is more of a "proof of concept" thing than anything else. So what the hell is it? Well it is a bit difficult to describe as I don't really know any other band that sounds like them except maybe Yoga? Or I guess a really drugged out and disoriented Haexenzijrkell? Kind of?

The biggest contributor to their uniqueness is a very distorted and psychedelic guitar tone which has a bunch of weird effects that seems super layered with short bursts of delay or reverb? Or perhaps there are several guitars in the mix? I'm not really sure exactly how they are pulling this sound off but I absolutely love it. The vocals are more of an afterthought and can be heard mainly in the back and are your usual fare of pained screams that you can often hear on lo-fi tapes like this. Drumwork is slow and plodding but fits very nicely with the "slowly dragged into a void while overdosed on heroin" atmosphere of the whole tape. The only problem I have with this demo is that the guitars are definitely too high in the mix and they are suffocating pretty much everything else here and that can get annoying at certain points. Despite those production decisions this tape absolutely fucking rocks and I'm looking forward to discover the rest of their output as this tape sounds to me very fresh and unique!

Kammerflimmer Kollektief - Absencen

This summer I shared a band called Bohren & Der Club Of Gore who are a quite known band for its genre. While I like Bohren and their sound they do tend to get kinda stale after a while. Lucky for us Germany seems to be a really good place for strange jazzy sombre bands and Kammerflimmer Kollektief is an excellent example of that.

Unlike Bohren though these guys tend to experiment with sounds a lot more often. Absencen was their fourth album released back in 2005 and they were ripping shit up. Perhaps the most positive side of this is that these guys are a lot more jazz oriented in playing. There are some really sweet solos and free jazz outbursts on this album but they also provide an ample supply of smooth melodies that we come to expect from bands like this. While the album is overall in darker tones it does not shy away from more playful and happier moments. There are some great "happier" songs here like Shibboleth or Unstet that offer some really nice soprano sax/guitar improvising and upbeat tempos. There also, of course, great sombre tracks like Nach dem Regen that remind me of rainy strolls through the city. There's a bit of everything here so it might feel a bit too random but after a few listens it all sinks in very well.

Generally speaking if you're looking for a modern jazz band that is not shackled in old school worship but also not too much in the free jazz area this might be right up your alley. It's a great mixture of experimental and orthodox with a lot of different instruments and approaches to atmosphere.

Osamu Tezuka is probably most known for his work on Metropolis and Astro Boy. I won't talk much about him because there's a hefty wikipedia page about him that you can read.

What I will talk about is his series of animation shorts that he did during his career. From what I believe there was a DVD release of those films or something like that but I didn't really check (I got all this from Surreal Moviez). Over the next few months or so (I honestly can't tell how long this "series" of posts will last) I'll be sharing them and offer quick insights. There are also some extra stuff that I'll probably post when I finish with main ones.

The feature for today is an experimental animated journey called Jumping. The title really explains it all and there's not much story here apart from some small symbolism. What's interesting here is the animation, small details and the effect it makes. The camera is always in first person so it might get dizzy at times.

With the animation itself I included the commentary video of how this was all made and so on because things like these require context like that.

Alarm Will Sound - Acoustica: Alarm Will Sound Performs Aphex Twin

As much as electronic music in general (especially more experimental) to me sounds inhuman and machine-like Alarm Will Sound pretty much convinced me that it can also be just as much as warm as is, say, folk or something similarly mellow like that.

Alarm Will Sound is a project in which a full blown professional 20 member orchestra plays Aphex Twin tunes and they play them extremely well and precise. They also have other albums where they play music from other contemporary artists but I think this is their most interesting work of art. The only non-orchestral instrument they use is drums for obvious reasons (as much as I like timpani I don't really think they would be able to work here) but other than that it's violins, tubas, trumpets, harps and everything else Aphex Twin sampled they transformed it to an acoustic sound. They play a wide arrangement of Richards tunes but they are mainly from Drukqs. Some mellow tracks and some really dissonant ones, you get a bit of everything.

If you like Aphex Twin you should really get this if you don't have it already. If you like dissonant contemporary classical music then you should get this as well.

A Silver Mt. Zion - He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts Of Light Sometimes Grace The Corner Of Our Rooms

This could perhaps be the saddest album I had the opportunity to listen. I wouldn't really call this depressive. Maybe melancholic is a better word. Depression would be "utter darkness" while this album is graced by shafts of light here and there.

A Silver Mt. Zion (and many alterations to its name) was/is some kind of side project by several members of the Godspeed You! Black Emperor "collective" - as they like to call themselves. It's not very like their main band. The thing I enjoyed the most here is that there is much more focus on orchestral instruments with guitars only being here and there to fill in the gaps. It starts to build up to some sort of climax but then it just vanishes at the end of the third song. After the third song everything slows down and slowly goes away. Perfect timing.

It's an interesting take on post-rock. I don't usually like the term "experimental" but I'll just add it to the tags because I think they tried something different in post rock here. If you can call this post rock in the first place.

Highly recommended if you'd ask me.

Asakawa Maki (浅川マキ)

So I hurd rumors on the internets that Asakawa Maki died. Apparently from a stroke which is not really a surprise because she did smoke a lot. I would tell you this more seriously but I don't take death very seriously (or life for that matter).

So in honor of her passing (read: rip off companies that are now taking all the profits from album sales) I decided to post all of her albums that I have. I previously only posted her Cat Nap but I will include that one here as well for the sake of completion.

Asakawa started her career in the 70s and she was releasing albums all through the 70s, 80s and 90s. During the 00s she took a break and didn't record all that much so in later life like many other musicians she only did live gigs and lived off that. Through all of her career she was mostly active in the jazz genre. All of her albums have this noir and melancholic feeling that makes me love her so much. Her incredibly different vocal ability from the rest of the Japanese singers gives her a sort of unique feel. Rarely you can hear a Japanese sing so low and torn up from cigarette smoke, especially from a female. Musically she varies from decade to decade. I only have one of her albums from the 70s but during the 80s she sounded far more happy and energetic than in the 90s. So yeah, you have a bit of everything in her career.

Where to start? Well I personally started with Cat Nap but I fell in love with her music when I heard Hitomoshigoro. I guess you can go along that route or start from the beginning of her career. Darkness albums have the most tracks and also a lot of improvisation songs, the usual jazz wankery.

Sun Ra - Lanquidity

Sun Ra has a huge discography and while this is great it is also very bad at the same time for those who wish to start listening to Sun Ra. Lanquidity is one of those albums I would certainly recommend to a casual jazz listener to check out if he never heard of Sun Ra and I would also recommend it to those who heard his other works as well. So why is this album exceptional? I love Sun Ra and all that but there are some albums that just drift too much in the noise sphere or sometimes are just plain swinging jazz we heard in the 40s and 50s. Sometimes on albums there are few calm songs and a 20 minute experimentation which can ruin the mood. Lanquidity on the other hand has that perfect balance. It's not exactly straight forward jazz experimentation yet it's not total random bollocks he sometimes did. It has that special things of his I can't really explain exactly.

Crazy People - Bedlam

Crazy People like many other psych rock bands were active during the 70s and didn't last very long. I don't think they released anything else besides this overlooked album. There's not much info about them on the net but from what I understood this is some kind of supergroup. It's only rumored though because the identities of the band members were never released so it might be just a marketing trick to make people buy it.

Musically it can't be any more psychedelic than it is. The usual set up of instruments. Those church sounding organs, cheesy porn movie sounding bass, drums and guitaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar. Along with the usual set up there are some weird experimentation and a habit of interrupting the jam with some weirdo sounds. I'm not very knowledgeable about the whole psych rock scene so I can't really give a detailed description. :(

Max Richter - 24 Postcards In Full Colour

Composer Max Richter was born in Germany in 1966 and grew up in the UK. He studied composition and piano at Edinburgh University, the Royal Academy of Music and in Florence with Luciano Berio.

Though he has a strong background in the canons of classical music, his influences were more modern composers and in particular, Iannis Xenakis whose musical compositions applied mathematical and physical laws and Philip Glass whose sound was a major influence on Richter. His influences also include rock bands The Beatles, Pink Floyd and The Clash, as well as electronic music groups Kraftwerk and Autechre.

This particular album holds (as you might have guessed) 24 songs. Each has an different approach and mood change. They really are like postcards. His piano parts remind me of Yann Tiersen for some reason. Quite interesting album.

Boris - Flood

Speaking of great bands how could I not mention Boris? Well here it is, Flood, one of the most unique albums they did. I went through a lot of trouble getting this one. Since the label has a great policy of not shipping their albums to my country I had to order it through a store from my city. Apparently they ordered it as a selling item that they will sell in the shop. The conversation I had with the shop owner was, intriguing.

Me: Hi, I'd like to order a cd.
Owner: Sure, just tell me the name.
Me: Boris.
Owner: Uh? The bands name not yours.
Me: Yes, Boris.
Owner: Are you trying to make fun of me? Tell me the name of the band.
Me: ...Boris.
Owner: The Band is called Boris?
Me: Yes.
Owner: And where are they from? Russia?
Me: No, they are from Japan.
Owner: Rrrright. So this obscure band is from Japan and they call themselves Boris? After a Russian name?
Me: They named themselves after a song from Melvins and they are not obscure.
Owner: I worked here for 17 years and I never heard of this band.

And so on and on. XD I don't really get it. I had to do the same conversation each time I came there and asked if the album arrived and every time they gave me a strange look like I just ate their mothers. Finally after 3 months of waiting it came direct from Japan. :3 Looks like first press too which makes it extra cool.

In any case if you are a bit older follower of this blog you probably remember when I posted the whole Boris discography (it was complete when I posted it, now there are a few releases missing). So I assume pretty much everyone heard of Flood before. There's not much to say. It's their own version of post-rock music of sorts. It's not really pure post rock as in Explosions In The Sky and similar. It actually starts with an really dull (to me at least) intro of one riff repeating and repeating. I usually like this sort of thing but this one just isn't enjoyable to me. So after that it switches to pretty much relaxed and laid back post rock and afterwords a tsunami comes and kills everything. In any case, get this, you'll like it! >:| It's just one long track split into four parts so I won't write the tracklist.

Song Of The Silent Land

Well here's something really nice. A compilation of unreleased material by a bunch of bands. :O This is the first compilation from Constellation to feature unreleased and rare tracks from the label roster. Originally produced to commemorate the Spring 2004 Constellation Roadshow Tour in Europe, this CD-only release includes contributions from every band on the roster up to 2004, ranging from recent recordings and remixes to early material that pre-dates the label’s existence. It also marks a return to earlier Constellation packaging, with textured cardstock paper and metallic foil printing (in two variations). Thirteen of the 14 tracks are previously unreleased.

There are all sorts of bands here and I could go explaining each song but seriously that would be pointless. I'll let you to explore this fantastic collaboration and let you discover new and great bands without me spoiling the fun of surprise. :O

Sun Ra

Sun Ra is a person I respect most high. Not a lot of people like him lived on this sad plant. Unfortunately my life started too late to witness him live but fortunately he left quite an abundance of music behind him for me to gnaw on and absorb the sonic sounds of his space love.

In any case I stumbled on accident on a blog called Blaxploitation Jive that posted a majority of his records. If you like Sun Ra then you must visit this blog!

Boris

Ah Boris. I have listened to a lot of bands (yay for internet) but Boris will always have a special part in my little wooden heart. Funny though, now that I finally did all this I have no idea what to write. I thought I should write some humongous text to go along with all of this but I don't really have anything constructive to say. So anyway, people who are beginning with this band will most likely ask themselves "Where to start?". Well that's a tricky question because Boris is an very diverse band they changed styles a lot of times. But here's my advice. If you are into drone then you should start off with Absolutego, then with Solomon volumes and then with Dronevil. If you are into sludge then you should start with Amplifier Worship. If you are into stoner metal/hard rock then start with all famous Pink album and Heavy Rocks. If you are into experimental and unusual then go with Soundtrack for film "Mabuta No Ura". That's little advice what I can give. Either way shall we start?

Besh o droM - Can't Make Me! (nekemtenemmutogatol!)

Balkan was always a place where people are constantly in deep shit. Always killed and oppressed from some power hungry maniac and also a border line between religions. Due to this big diversity in cultures in such a small place the music from here is equally wild and non-rule following so to say. Besh o droM is a fine example of this music performed by Hungarian gypsies that mix a lot of different ethnic instruments originating from Hungary, Egypt and other interesting places. This is all good and great in all songs but the only downside of this album is the annoying turn-tabling that doesn't fit into this at all. Still it can grow on you and later on doesn't bother you at all.

A Silver Mt. Zion - Pretty Little Lightning Paw

A Silver Mt. Zion is a post-rock band formed in 1999 by Godspeed You! Black Emperor musicians Efrim Menuck, Sophie Trudeau and Thierry Amar. According to an interview with VPRO Radio in The Netherlands, originally the project was for Efrim to learn how to score music, but the idea was soon abandoned as Efrim decided that he preferred music not to be defined by rules, preferring simply what sounds best. Despite this, he continued the project out of a desire to experiment with ideas that would not work within the context of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The decision to record an album was partly inspired by the death of his dog Wanda, who had died while Godspeed You! Black Emperor was on tour. He wanted to record an album in her memory, but did not feel that he could effectively do this through Godspeed’s collective, consensus format.

Unlike Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion’s music often features vocals. The last few albums they have released contain no purely instrumental tracks. Efrim confessed that he was uncomfortable with this at first, feeling “foolish” and uncomfortable with the role of the singer in music generally. That is, he did not want to be the focus of the band’s music but rather wished to use vocals as a stylistic tool. Some fans were initially ambivalent about the use of vocals, but Efrim’s poetic lyrical style is now well respected among fans. Furthermore, A Silver Mt. Zion’s fanbase has expanded, and they are no longer seen merely as an offshoot of Godspeed You! Black Emperor but as a unique and separate entity.

Alan Stivell - Chemins De Terre

Whenever someone would mention to me Celtic music I would always think of Scots in skirts playing their instruments (which I forgot the name >.<) in some rainy hilly place. Well this is Celtic too but Alan Stivell is from France. The music he creates is usually played with harp but he also plays other folklore instruments. The sweet compositions of harp gives you this medieval feeling that goes throughout the album but he also experiments with combining the old sounds with new sounds and instruments like electric guitars. While I find experimenting in music always positive and am very open to it I'm not really a fan of this decision to implement such instruments. I guess I'm just an old conservative when it comes to folklore music. But not all songs are like that, there is still an good amount of old fashioned songs. Released in 1974 (I know my folder says 1973, that was a typing error).

Suishou no Fune - Where The Spirits Are

Suishou no Fune is an very interesting psychedelic rock that came out of Japan. Their sound is not very melodic but focuses much more on the atmosphere of the songs. Formed in 1999 as a duo of female guitarist Pirako Kurenai and male guitarist Kageo, Suishou no Fune have been making some of the most charmingly chaotic dream music coming out of Japan. Their sound contains subcutaneous elements of no-wave energy mixed with psychedelic rock á la early Fushitsusha or Kousokuya. Other songs approach balladry with oddly beautiful twinned vocals and distorted guitars.

Boredoms - Ichi The Killer Soundtrack

Ichi the killer was at first an manga that started around 1998 and finished in 2001, which means it ran for a very long time. The plot revolves around two main characters. One is a guy called Ichi who looks like a normal guy and does everything normal people do but acts like a total pussy. The good thing about Ichi is that when someone makes him cry he turns into a psychotic killer with razor blades on his boots and starts to cut everyone and everything in a nice gory way. The second character is Kakihara an yakuza masochist who seeks Ichi because he is fascinated by his violence. The manga later got an movie adaptation and Boredoms made a soundtrack for it! Since this is the only Boredoms album I listened (yes I'm ashamed to admit it) I can't really compare how this album is different from their other works but nevertheless this soundtrack is great filled with tribal like drums and has an quite good jazzy feeling throughout the album.

Bill Wells & Maher Shalal Hash Baz - Osaka Bridge

Uniting the disparate elements of Scottish jazz-guru Bill Wells and Japan’s willfully amateur Maher Shalal Hash Baz ensemble, ‘Osaka Bridge’ (Karaoke Kalk, 2006) is an album that doesn’t shirk from it’s lofty aspirations - bringing a juxtaposition of styles together and reigning them into collaboration without losing either party’s creative finger-print. The music is full of youthful optimism, with broken pop jangles played alongside splashes of classic jazz tones. With the brass section joyfully oblivious to bum notes and missed cues, an endearing rolling rhythm over uplifting wind sections. Songs share both the imagination-run-riot ambition of the dream world and the inevitable melancholy of being rudely re-inserted back in the desert of the real.
