Necros

Ah good old punk. This short records kinda brings me back the nostalgia of those suburban high school punk bands from USA. Not that I ever lived there but I can picture how their life was (or at least approximate :D).

The Necros was formed in 1979 in Maumee, Ohio. They were a punk band made up of high school kids playing fast, furious, short songs of the sort that were eventually dubbed “hardcore” by the media a couple years later. In 1980, the Necros recorded a demo, and in early 1981, Tesco Vee and Dave Stimson (of Touch and Go fanzine) fronted the money to release 4 of those songs as a 7” record (commonly known as the Sex Drive 7”). This 7” became the first release on Touch and Go Records.

It might be recognized as hardcore later but it sounds like ordinary punk to me. D:

Suehiro Maruo - Rose Colored Monster

Most of FT readers should already be aware that when it comes to Maruo works I turn into a teen giggling schoolgirl that just got a pink cellphone which means that I'll drool a lot in this post.

Rose Colored Monster was Maruos debut work. He was 26 when he released it and if you compare it to his newer work you can notice the amateurism and high motivation in this work. Since it was his first official book he was free to do anything he wants and so he did. Stories vary from sad romances to outright scat drawings and then switches to a class abuse story. The opening story is called "Das Kabinett Des Dr. Caligari" or in English "The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari". It's worthwhile to mention that this is actually an tribute to a German silent expressionist film from the late 20s that went by the same way. There's a torrent circulating around for it so you can download it from isohunt if you'd like to see it (I did and I liked it; you might not if you are not into silent films). Other works also have various tributes and references which actually (to me at least) lets you discover with what things the author is fascinated by and thus peek a bit into his own life.

There's also a prototype/prequel of Midori here. The story is called "The Secret And Sad Story Of The Camelia Girl". While he didn't directly use this plot in the "Amazing Freakshow" he did use it in the animated version of Midori. There are also some really perverted stories in this one that I found really funny. I'm not sure if it is supposed to be funny but then again I have a weird sense of humor.


The art of the manga is still in a bit boy~ish stage so it's not as much detailed as his later works but there are some great but simple drawings like this one below:

Which is yet another reference to silent films (a film that most of you should recognize I think D:)

He also tends to experiment with coloration. I really like the use of red color mixed with black. It gives me this elegant yet fashionable style to the characters with a bit gothic touch. Some though are just inverted colors and some are just plain simple and boring.

Oh well, I won't bother you anymore.

I bought this cd on a punk gig in my city. I never heard of them but I wanted to buy it anyway since it was cheap and I kinda liked the cover.

Well it's standard hardcore anti capitalist punk we all know and love!

Yndi Halda - Enjoy Eternal Bliss

Yndi Halda are a post-rock band from Canterbury, United Kingdom. ‘Yndi Halda’ is Old Norse for “Enjoy Eternal Bliss”, also the name of their “self-titled” debut. The band’s music is characterized by expansive, cinematic pieces that have seen the group compared to modern classical and post rock - however, Yndi Halda’s work is usually considered more thematically optimistic or hopeful, and more song-based than artists of those genres. Quite good and enjoyable post-rock that I'm lately listening.

Shintaro Kago - Super-Conductive Brains

Personally I hold this as Shintaros best work, ever. This time around it's not an one shot but a full book. It presents different stories settled in a future world in which biomechanoids of any kind are created for every purpose. The art much more detailed and the story is much more in depth.

These biomechanoids look totally absurd and surreal. An truly unique experience. I suggest you read this even if you might not be into grotesque art. Also this one of the few books that Shintaro published. There are three in total to my knowledge. First one would be this, the sceond would be Dance! Kremlin Palace that is currently being translated and the last one would be Bride In Front Of The Station that I only have untranslated. :<

Harry Roy and His Mayfair Hotel Orchestra

I love this photo.

In the good days of swing there were a lot of bands. Some are well known and made a mark on history and some were, eh, less successful. Harry Roy and his orchestra falls into the other category. This does not mean that he's terrible or bad at playing. It's just that his orchestra never made it big.

There's not much info about him but his bio on wiki is here so you can read if you'd like. What makes this one a bit more unique from others is that he sometimes would make a bit provocative songs. They are of course perfectly normal songs with perfectly normal lyrics but they make your imagination go wild har har. No one really tried to ban such songs but they can sometimes be quite direct. While most are aimed at sexual references one is even appealing on suicide. It's called "I'm Gonna Kiss Myself, Goodbye" and the lyrics go:

In any case I compiled a bunch of his songs so this isn't any album or anything. It's just a bunch of his songs in one zip. Quality varies but most are in good shape.

Kyaaa. Yes these are mine. I bought them. First manga evar on paper that I own. :3 It might not be a big deal to you but it is to me since this is an official release and it's also translated to my pagan language. In case you don't recognize the covers this is Blade of the Immortal which is something I was planning to read for quite a while now.

It's also one of the first mangas that are being published in my country. I expect more to come or I will post dramatic anime screenshots. >:|

AK47/Senata Fox - Split

Doing it, cephalochromoscope style.

I uploaded this before I scanned it so I'm putting all the scans in the post. It's not my rip and apparently this is a vinyl rip. Oh well, I have it on tape so I guess the sound is better here.

Ak47 play crusty (the clown) hardcore communist anarcho as fvck punk while Senata Fox also (oh surprise) plays hardcore punk but in a much more happier fashion and the vocals are also high pitched (they also sound fucking awesome live). Senata Fox also has some nifty groovy riffs that I enjoy a lot.

The lyrics here are in English so you can read them but it's just a few songs. You also get a free small paper notebook when you buy this. It's full with lyrics by both bands but I don't know where I placed it so I haven't scanned it, yet. Because I can't find it ok? When I find it I'll scan it and add it here (if I remember lolololol).

Fats Waller - Sugar Blues

He was an excellent pianist — now usually considered one of the very best who ever played in the stride style. Many believe that his songwriting and his lovable, roguish stage personality often overshadowed his playing. Before his solo career, he played with many performers, from Erskine Tate to Bessie Smith, but his greatest success came with his own five- or six-piece combo, “Fats Waller and his Rhythm”. Fats Waller was such an impressive and talented pianist that he came to the attention of the rich and famous - sometimes whether he wanted to or not. Fats Waller was in Chicago in 1926 and, upon leaving the building where he was performing, Waller was kidnapped by four men, who bundled him into a car and drove off. The car later pulled up outside the Hawthorne Inn, owned by infamous gangster Al Capone. Fats was ordered inside the building, to find a party in full swing. With a gun against his back, Waller was pushed towards a piano, whereupon the gangsters demanded he start playing. A terrified Waller suddenly realized he was the “surprise guest” at Al Capone’s birthday party. Soon comforted by the fact that he wouldn’t die, Waller played, according to rumor, for three days. When he left the Hawthorne Inn, he was very drunk, extremely tired, and had earned thousands of dollars in cash given to him by Capone himself and by party-goers as tips.

Though Waller could read and write music well (from his classical keyboard studies as a child) and would even, on occasion, perform organ works of Bach for small groups, his brilliant improvisations have had to be transcribed from old recordings and radio broadcasts. The pianist and keyboard professor Paul Posnak has recently produced transcriptions of 16 of Waller’s greatest solos, published by Hal Leonard, and himself performs these in concerts worldwide. In 1978 a Broadway musical entitled Ain’t Misbehavin’ was produced. Performed by five African American actors, it showcased the works of Waller in the style of a musical revue and included such songs as “Honeysuckle Rose”, “The Joint is Jumpin’”, and “Ain’t Misbehavin’”. The show opened at the Longacre Theatre and ran for over 1600 performances.

Oh in any case this is really, really lovely piano playing and smooth lovable jazz singing.
