Sun Ra - Sleeping Beauty

Yes! I'm going to shove down some more Sun Ra down your throat! In flac this time!

Sleeping beauty is another very good example where Sun Ra implemented experimentation/free jazz while not completely destroying structure and some sort of orientation as to where the music is going. In fact I think it's quite groovy. Especially the second track. The album is rather short, about 29 minutes which is a shame. I'd really wish it would last longer. Sit back and roll over in spaceeee~

Tracklist:

01. Springtime Again (9:12)
02. Door Of The Cosmos (8:53)
03. Sleeping Beauty (11:48)

In glorious flac.

Scholastic Deth

Scholastic Deth was once upon a time a fast and furious hardcore punk/powerviolence band from the US. I'm not sure if (and I'm not trying to sound sexist here) the vocalist is male or female. On the photos this person looks male but on the recording t either sounds like female voice or it's just some angry 9 year old kid telling you to fuck off. Either way works for me.

They had a sound which differed from many of their peers, which seemed to take a lot of qualities from old-school hardcore, creating fast, fun and positive music with a message. This message dealt with everything from skateboarding, the love of coffee and life as a nerd, to the lack of substance and political awareness in hardcore today, problems and calling people on their shit within DIY subculture and the hypocrisy surrounding punks bidding on a 2oz piece of vinyl on a corporate auction site.

I have three of their releases which are all EPs I guess. I left the source in the files from where I got the releases so go over there and check some more punk and smash capitalism.

Quadro Nuevo - Luna Rossa

Despite the Spanish name, Quadro Nuevo is a German quartet playing tango, flamenco and Valse Musette created in 1996. Well anyway their guitarist toured around with Paco de Lucia who you probably know if you are into flamenco. That's how I found out about this group. It's a good mix of jazz and tango so to speak. The flamenco influence on this album isn't very strong, perhaps it is on some other albums. This one is rather calm and moody. Great stuff.

Acomplishment

Finally I have them on CD. I'll post scans + flac soon. :3

Sun Ra - Somewhere Over The Rainbow

Recently I've been digging through Sun Ra's vast discography (yet again). I'm not really sure if this is an official release. Could be a live bootleg or something but it certainly is a vinyl rip so sound quality isn't exactly clean and nice. In any case it's a recording of one of Arkestras live performance so you have his signature sound present. What I especially like is the fact that during this performance Sun Ra approached a lot of classics from jazz and also some soundtracks and gave them his magic intergalactic touch. So ever wondered how Over The Rainbow sounds in full space orchestra? Well that was the moment when I realized that I need to hear this album. He also sort of "reworks" the Gone With the Wind theme and dibbles a little with jazz standards. Overall this isn't exactly something mandatory from his vast career but it certainly is worth checking out if you are a fan of Sun Ra.

Tracklist:
01. We Live To Be
02. Gone With The Wind
03. Make Another Mistake
04. Take The A Train
05. Amen Amen Amen (Meni, Many, Amens)
06. Over The Rainbow
07. I'll Wait For You

Seiichirou Tokunan - Human Clock

Here's an odd ball.

I haven't read something odd like this in a while. The story follows the life of a young man. His family sells and makes clocks so our protagonist has developed an particular fetish. He likes to stare into watches. Make no mistake though, as innocent as this sounds our protagonist is no hero, in fact I don't think there are any good guys in this story. As the story progresses we follow our hero into insanity.

Even if this manga is old (originally released in 1962) it still delivers a lot of fun. Everything here is so different from what mangas look nowadays it makes it interesting to read just for that. The story might seem a little stupid but I think it's rather unique and odd in a good way. The art style could be a little better at times but it certainly enhances the overall dread of the story. It truly is insanity at its best for me. :D

Takahashi Chikuzan (高橋竹山) - Tsugaru-Shamisen

I can't really say that this is actually for everyone. I even know some people who hate this instrument. Shamisen is some kind of Asian equivalent of the acoustic guitar that was developed in Europe. Its music appears in a lot of samurai movies and the sort.

This album is completely composed only for Shamisen which is why for some it might be very dull. On the other hand if you adore this instrument and its sound then this is your holy grail. Takahashi Chikuzan is one of the most famous players of this instrument and is quite talented. So sit back and enjoy some bad ass playing.

Shione Yukawa (湯川潮音) - Gray

Since the last album I posted sparked some interest, here's another one of hers. This is actually her latest one. It was released in 2008 and there is another album from 2009 but it's all covers from various other (damn) hippies.
Personally this is the least one I like from all the three albums I have. This does not means it sucks it's just that I prefer the other ones from this one. I can't really explain why but I guess it could be that this album is much more westernized. If that makes any sense. :S That should not turn you off from this album though. It has everything we all love and adore from this artist. Her distinctive voice is still there and the lovely merry compositions are still present. It has that feeling of early spring.

Newsreel

Sorry about the lack of, well, anything. I've been unusually busy with other things that are outside of the netsphere. Nevertheless I amassed some stuff in the process of being outside my house so I'll probably start posting shit after that day that comes after monday (forgot the name; srijeda).

Anyway, for shits and giggles here's a recent dream I had:

I found myself in front of an building waiting to go in. In my hands I was holding a notebook in which I was supposed to practice mathematics. I went inside the building and rode the elevator up to the top (I think). The elevator inside was filled with faces stitched to all sides. For some reason that didn’t really bother me. Eventually I got out and rang on some door. An old lady opened the door and told me to come in. There were three people living in that apartment and all were female. They were all old ladies. They were really happy that I came and eagerly started asking me questions about how will I learn mathematics. Eventually we sat on a bed and one of the three old women just remained. She was really annoying and was very persistent in holding me. Eventually I got really annoyed and I left. I opened the front door and entered into a big church (dream teleportation ftw). I realized it was the church in my town where I used to go as a kid but for some reason it had much more halls and was overall a lot bigger than in reality (did I ever mention that reality sucks a lot more than dreams?). The old woman from before was also there and she came near me holding tightly my arm. The church was filled with people and I was getting more and more frustrated about the whole thing. At one point I freaked out, grabbed a candle holder and stabbed the old woman in the eyes repeatedly with it. After she collapsed I took a wooden cross and shoved it in her mouth. The whole church stared at me. I looked up at the ceiling and I saw millions of stars burning. I walked out of the church and started heading home. Half way to my home I woke up. :S

Shione Yukawa (湯川潮音) - Yuki no Warutsu

Here's another artist that does not get the praise it deserves. Recently though she's getting some attention (at least on Last.fm :S) and hopefully she'll elevate a little bit out of this annoying obscurity. I posted another one of her albums before here.

Just like the album I posted previously this one is also merry and happy. Sometimes it even sounds like a soundtrack for some Ghibli anime. :D I'm not really in the mood for long posts so; yeah.
